In 2019 Chicago, Estrella, 30s, a book shop owner, struggles and fails to make the perfect paella to commemorate the one year anniversary of her Spanish father Miguel’s death. Soon, she seeks the missing ingredient, saffron, from Estéban, 40s, a wise Spanish chef and gourmet shop owner. However, she returns to her family home empty handed and argues with Sandra, 60s, her Anglo mother, as they grieve and seek new ways to honor the memory of her beloved father.
